[Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii).] In the distillation of solid fuel by superheated steam in a retort 1, the hot distillates, before entering a condenser 2, are cooled in a washer 3 by contact with a large quantity of a pre-heated emulsion of water and phenol, which passes into a vacuum chamber 5 in which steam is generated, this steam being returned through a superheater 7 to the retort 1. Additional heat may be supplied in a heater 10 to the emulsion before it enters the vacuum chamber 5. The emulsion from the chamber 5 is fed by a pump 8 to a receptacle 9 from which it is again fed into the washer 3. Oils may be withdrawn from the emulsion in known manner.
