Abstract

272,212. Pescara, R. P. June 5, 1926, [Convention date]. Actuating pumps by fluid-pressure motors; compound piston pumps. - Air is compressed in stages by pistons 22, 24, 26. Fig. 1, working in coaxial cylinders of different diameters and formed integral with motor pistons 20 working in an internal-combustion cylinder. After compression in the first and second stages the air passes through coolers 37, 50 to reservoirs 33, 46, from which pipes lead to the next higher stage; the final stage delivers to a reservoir 57. The outlet valves 59 in the high-pressure cylinder lead from passages in the cylinder sides, which are covered by the piston near the end of its stroke, leaving a cushion of compressed air to return the piston. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the motor piston 122 surrounds the first stage compressor piston 120, leaving an annular space 169 in which a gas cushion is compressed by a fixed cylindrical projection.
