Materials, actuating; mixing air and gas. - Apparatus for supplying a mixture of acetylene and air to an engine comprises a gas inlet G opening into a chamber F, provided with a throttle valve H, and a valve-controlled air inlet K, connected to the induction pipe J. Cocks A<1>, E<1> regulating the supply of gas and of water to a gas generator B, may be arranged to be operated simultaneously with the valves H, K. A slow-running gas inlet G<1>, regulated by an ebonite pointer screw I, may be provided. The acetylene generator B comprises a water tank 1, Fig. 2, and removable carbide receptacles 2 having false bottoms 4 and perforated water tubes 5; water nozzles 6 are controlled by needle valves 7 opeirated either independently or simultaneously; a relief valve 10 and a pressure gauge 11 are provided. A gas purifier C comprises layers of cotton wool and powdered ferric oxychloride, retained between perforated metal screens. A storage chamber D having a pressure gauge N is provided for the gas.
