Coking processes.-Water gas or producer gas is supplied to an externally heated retort and is passed through the charge of carbonaceous material which moves in a thin layer over the heated surfaces, and mixes with the products of distillation to give an illuminating or heating gas. The added gas may be heated either by the heat of the retort or by the hot coke or by the distillation products. In retorts provided with outlets for fractionated distillation products, the added gas is supplied separately to each fraction.
