Jigs.-Raw material such as coal is fed into the jig by a shoot 1 and falls on a screen plate 2 where it is subjected to water pulsations. The denser and larger particles of impurities take up the lowest position and are drawn off through a gate 3 into the boot of an elevator 4. Less dense impurities forming a higher layer are withdrawn through a gate 5 and carried to the elevator by a conveyor 14. The coal mixed with small and light particles of impurity occupies the upper layer of the bed on the screen and the small particles of impurity pass through a vertical plate 6 provided with slits or perforations into a chamber 8 while the larger jigged product is flushed by the water over a cover plate 7 to a discharge outlet 11. The cover plate 7 may be perforated and may be slightly inclined. The smaller sized material collected in the chamber 8 is submitted to water pulsations on a screen 9, the coal passing off through the outlet 11 and the impurities being discharged through a gate 10 and shoot 12 to a conveyor 13.
