Abstract

1,120,946. Washing granular materials. W. H. DAVIES & SONS Ltd. 11 Nov., 1965 [20 Aug., 1964], No. 34017/64. Heading B2H. Solid material containing at least three products is separated into its constituents by feeding the material into a tank using water as a carrier medium, rocking the tank to produce a tidal action in the water such that the heaviest and next heaviest of the products are gravitationally separated at a first and second stage respectively, and carrying the lightest of the products by the water past the first stage and a partition and then past the second stage. An apparatus, for separating raw coal into top grade coal, middlings and foreign matter such as shale rocks and stone, comprises a tank 3 having a feed inlet 3a for water and raw coal and an outlet 3b for top grade coal and water. The tank is supported on springs 7, 8 and is rocked about a fulcrum beam 2 by a motor and crank mechanism 4, 5 mounted below, as shown, or above the tank. The tank is divided internally by a partition 9 into two stages having dished bases 10, 14 which include an inclined perforated plate 11 and a solid plate 15 respectively, and doors 12, 16 controlled by an adjustable counterweight 13, 17 and adapted to open into chutes 18, 20 having outlets 19, 21 controlled by rotary gate valves 22, 25 manually operated by ratchet means 23, 26. In operation, water and raw coal are fed at 3a into the tank which is rocked about. A jet of water is directed by means of a connection 27 through the perforated plate 11 in the general direction of the flow of water in the tank. The top grade coal and middlings are maintained in suspension while the foreign matter gravitates on to the door 12 which opens when sufficient matter has accumulated on to it. The top grade coal and middlings are carried by the water over the partition 9 and into the second stage where the middlings gravitate on to the door 16 and are subsequently discharged while the top grade coal is discharged with the water at 3b.
