265,418. Menzies, W. C. April 7, 1926. Upward-current classifiers.-Coal or like material is delivered from a shoot 6 into a tank 1 between an adjustable baffle 10 and the rear wall 2 of the tank. The tank has a transversely extending intermediate wall 15 above which a plate 17 extends between the side walls of the tank, the opening between the wall 15 and the plate 17 being controlled by an adjustable plate 20. The coal descends on to the imperforate, forwardly inclined, elevated portion 11 of a screen plate 11<a> extending between the rear wall 2 and the intermediate wall 15 and comprising a perforated steeply inclined portion 12, a perforated, less inclined part 13, and an imperforate front portion. A steady stream of water is forced through the screen from the chamber below by a pump 27 supplied from a tank 25, an adjustable deflecting plate 31 being arranged to direct the water through the screen.. The coal is carried above the plate 17 and passes down a slope 50 through a restricted outlet 40, such outlet, being controlled by an adjustable slide 43. Some water passes with the coal through the outlet, the remainder flowing through an opening in the rear wall of the tank on to a screen 42 over the tank 25. The coal passing through the outlet 40 falls on an inclined screen 41 where it is separated from the water which drains through the screens 41, 42 into the tank 25. The heavy impurities are discharged from the screen 11<a> through the opening between the wall 15 and plate 20 on to an elevator 52. Sludge is removed from the tank 1 through opening controlled by valves 63, 64.
