Abstract

218,353. Swallow, J. March 2, 1923. Stationary-vessel wet-separating and washing apparatus.-Coal and shale, ash and clinker, &c., are separated, or coal &c. is graded, by separating the materials into two laterally distinct streams in their fall through a fluid medium and then submitting the materials to the action of a substantially horizontal current of the medium. A closed tank 1 full of water receives a current of water from an inlet 3, the water flowing out through a passage 4 preferably provided with valves 24 to vary the water level. The tank is divided into compartments by partitions 12, 13 with adjustable upper ends 14, 15. The material under treatment is supplied by a chute 22 to a feed passage 5 in which an upward current may be provided by opening an outflow cock 23; the chute is inclined so as to effect the initial separation by giving the material a horizontal component of motion opposed to that of the water from the inlet 3, which water carries the lighter or smaller material into the left-hand compartment. A secondary water current is provided by a lower inlet 7 with an upwardly-turned inner end 9 to prevent dispersal of the main current at this point. The compartments have sloping bottoms and special conveyers for removing the materials. Additional partitions may be provided and the partitions may be slidable. The upward current in passage 5 may be produced or controlled by a baffle. Specification 164/93 is referred to.
