Description
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD PAUL, or sYLvAN LAKE, NEW YoEK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GREWASHERS.
Spcification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,275, dated January 6, 1874; application filed December 27, 1872.
the muddy water. The object of the present,
invention is to deliver the fine ore, from the chute or sluice in which such washing-Water runs, in a cleaner and better condition than heretofore. My device is for more perfectly washin g the ore and removing the water from the same, so that it is delivered in a more nearly dry condition. I employ a perforated bottom to the sluice or trough, through which the muddy portion of the water runs, and asecond supply of water is delivered upon the ore, near the bottom of the sluice or trough, to Wash the ore and deliver it upon a perforated inclined plate or grate, where the water drains away, allowing the ore to be removed in a nearly dry condition.
In the drawing, Figure l is a section of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
The ore is supplied into a trough, b, in which a stream of Water is running that is sufficiently rapid to carry the ore, earth, and foreign matter along with it. At the bottom of the inclined trough b is a perforated grate or screen, c, the openings in which are sufficiently large to allow the muddy and sandy portions of the Water to pass away through such openings and fall into the trough d below. The ore, as it reachesV the lower portion of the inclined screen c, is washed by the Water from the trough or sluice b, that does not contain as much foreign matter as the Water near the bottom of the trough. The curved sides f of the trough gather the ore toward the top of the inclined grate or grates h; and near the delivery-mouth thus formed is a pipe, l, that discharges water upon the ore, to wash the same, and cause its delivery upon the said grate or grates. At the bottoms of the inclined grates h are platforms, upon which the ore is received and subsequently removed. A portion of each platform k is made with -perforations, so as to allow water to drain away from the ore into the trough d, and pass away with the waste water; thus the ore becomes nearly dry when delivered. Thehperforated portion k may be at an inclination, and provided with a mouth to direct the ore into a car or cart placed beneath such delivery-mouth.
A screen of metal bars has been made use of in the bottom of the chute; but, in practice, it is found that the small pieces of ore lodge in the openings between the bars, and the placed beneath the plane of, and at an anglel to, the curb of the sluice.
I claim as my invention- 1. The trough b, screen c, and inclined grate h, in combination with the pipe l, supplying water near the bottom end of the screen c, for the purpose specified.
2. The perforated platform k at the bottom of the inclined grate h., as and for the purpose specified.
3. The screen c, made of perforated sheet metal, and combined with the trough b and grate h, as set forth, so that the force of water running in the trough b shall move the ore freely over such perforated plate c to the point of delivery, as set forth.
Signed by me this 23d day of December, A. D. 1872.
EDWARD PAUL.
