Abstract
370,516. Washing granular materials. MENZIES, W. C., 1820, Olive Street, Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Jan. 16, 1931, No. 1542. [Class 82 (ii).] In apparatus for washing coal or other minerals in which a constant pressure stream of water is passed through a screen on which the heavy constituents accumulate, the screen is constructed so that the flow of water through the screen is greater at that part where the layer of accumulated material is thickest. A tank 1 is divided into compartments 2, 3, 4 by partitions 5, 6, a sloping screen 15, through which water at constant pressure from a supply 20 is passed, being mounted in the compartment 2. The mineral to be washed is introduced down a shoot 11 under an adjustable gate 12 into a compartment formed by the wall of the tank 1 and a partition 13 with an adjustable baffle 14 from which it passes on to the screen. The lighter constituents rise and pass over a weir 23 on to a platform 25 of inverted V shape from which they pass through apertures 26 controlled by gates 31 to perforated troughs 33 in which they are drained, the water falling on to a plate 34 and into a tank 35. The heavy constituents accumulate on the screen, mainly at the lower end beneath a plate 40 projecting over the screen and attached by a flange 41 to an adjustable discharge gate 21. The screen adjacent the plate 40 is formed so that an increased flow of water is obtained at this point, for example by increasing the size of some of the perforations as shown at 42 and 51, in Figs. 3 and 4 respectively. The heavy constituents passing through the discharge gate are removed by a conveyer 10. An aperture controlled by a gate 30 is provided to regulate the height of the water in the compartments 2, 3.
