Class 82 (2) A machine for washing peas comprises a chamber which is wide at its top portion and narrow at its base with inclined walls extending between the wide and narrow portions, the peas after removal of sand, mud and stones being delivered along with water into said chamber, cross partitions dividing the part of the chamber above the narrow base portion into compartments, the peas or sinkers dropping into the narrow base along which there is a rapid flow of water and travelling therealong to an outlet of cross-sectional dimensions similar to those of the narrow base, the partitions providing for a slow rate of flow along the chamber compartments of water and floating debris to one or more side discharge shoots on the chamber for such debris and surface water. The peas are fed into a hopper a supplied with water through a pipe b and pass over a sand separating grid u, sand being received into, and discharged from, the troughs c. A skimmerplate across the passage ejects floating matter down a trough g<SP>1</SP>, and the peas then pass under adjustable baffles f, the stones &c. being deposited. Water jets e in the troughs v tend to keep the peas buoyant. The peas pass into a chamber i which is broad at the top, with a narrow bottom portion joined to the rest of the chamber by sloping sides. The chamber has cross partitions m each having an opening at n with an adjustable gate o. Ramps p cause any peas passing along the channel to rise momentarily and release any light material which may have become entrained with the peas.
