Abstract

275,778. Elmore, F. E. July 16, 1926. Flotation processes and apparatus.-In a vacuum process for the concentration of coal, ores, and the like, the pulp is sucked up into a separating chamber as a substantially vertical stream travelling at approximately constant velocity. The constant velocity may be obtained by arranging that the stream shall have increasing cross section in the upward direction. In the apparatus shown, pulp from a hopper w is drawn up a tapering pipe u by suction applied at a pipe e. The pipe u opens at about the middle of a double conical separating vessel a and is provided at the upper end with louvres x. The concentrates pass into a vessel d and are discharged down a pipe g into a launder h, while the tailings pass down a pipe k from which they are discharged by an intermittently operated valve m, actuated by a cam t and adjustable rod q. Radial baffles y are provided in the vessel a and water may be admitted through a tangential jet z to impart rotation to the pulp and facilitate the liberation of any remaining concentrates. A jet i may be provided to increase the velocity in the pipe g. Specifications 29282/04 and 191,383 are referred to.
