Abstract

Particles or droplets of an immiscible fluid suspended in a liq. are removed by a flotation process in which microbubbles formed in the liq. adhere to the suspended particles and float them to the surface of a flotation chamber. The micro-bubbles are created by saturating the suspension with a gas and then passing it through a channel contg. a flap valve leading to the flotation chambers. The flap valve is periodically and suddenly closed and opened causing low pressure waves to be created and consequent cavitation in the flowing fluid. The micro-bubbles are formed when the cavities implode further down the channel. The flow is so arranged, that the micro-bubbles are formed in a zone in which the fluid is super-saturated with gas so that, as the bubbles collect particles, they also grow.
