Abstract

11,988. Draper, J. M. May 21. Jigs of the kind described in Specifications 15,285/06 and 20,894/06, for the separation of solid materials, such as coal from slate, are provided with means for reducing the amount of fine material passing through the screen, and for adjusting the height of the discharge sill for heavy material, and removing the stratified material from the points of discharge. The feed end 4<a> of the perforated screen 4 is cut off from direct contact with the water in the tank 6 by a partition 11 forming a chamber 8 provided with a perforated wall 7 and with non-return valves 14 opening inwards. Water passing upwards through the valves 14 is diverted horizontally and acts on the rear of the entering material and hinders the passage of the fine material through the bottom 4, while a perforated portion 12 may be provided through which and the port 4<a> water passes vertically to start the stratification. A vertically adjustable gate 15 is mounted near the discharge end, under which the heavy material passes to a vertically adjustable sill 16. The material accumulating above the heavy material is continuously removed by a conveyer, preferably in the form of a series of scrapers 25 mounted on an endless belt 26, the scrapers working over an inclined bed 30 forming a continuation of the sill 31 on the box 1. The heavy material is similarly removed from the bottom of the tank 6. The box 1 may be formed with additional points of discharge intermediate of its length, as described in Specification 20,894/06.
