Abstract

741,987. Washing granular material. HARDINGE, H. Jan. 22, 1952 [Jan. 26, 1951], No. 1749/52. Class 82(2). [Also in Group I] Particles of different sizes e.g. sands and fines are separated by feeding the mixture of the particles into a pool of liquid, progressively withdrawing successive quantities of the mixture from the pool in contiguous compartments or pockets along an inclined path, and, as said quantities are moved above the liquid level of the pool, decanting, through the top only of said compartments, a portion back into the pool while shielding oncoming quantities from appreciable contact therewith. The mixture is fed as a pulp from inlet 16 and the fine particles are carried by the overflow of liquid at 22. An endless belt 24 having vanes 44 conveys the sands up the inclined bottom of the tank over a bed of sand 58. The endless belt is of impermeable material and has at least one hole formed therethrough for each compartment formed by the vanes. As the compartments raise successive quantities of sand above the liquid level of the tank some of the water from the compartments is decanted through the holes carrying entrained fines with it. The force of the water emitted through the holes prevents any reverse flow of water carrying fines back to the compartments and therefore the succeeding compartmentfuls of sand are not contaminated. If desired an upward flow of water can be diverted through the sand bed and thus through the sand in the compartments, to assist the decanting and separating actions. The vanes engage side plates which are spring-pressed thereto and constitute the sides of the compartments. Angle pieces 50 act to guide the vanes. The lower end of the belt may be adjusted vertically by a handle 38 and an associated rack and pinion. In a modification (not shown) the endless belt is replaced by a disc carrying radially disposed vanes on one side and rotating about an inclined axis.
