Abstract

265,636. Geffcken, H., and Richter, H. Feb. 8, 1926, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes; metallic-vapour apparatus.- Rays useful for activating oxygen and other substances and for medical and hygienic purposes are generated by a glow-discharge lamp having an envelope transparent to ultra-violet rays and designed, as regards the materials and spacing of the electrodes and the character of the gas filling, so that the discharge can be maintained at a normal supply voltage, say 220 volts. The gas may be an inert one, for instance a mixture of neon and helium. A body of mercury may be included, and may form the cathode; the anode also may be of mercury, and the quantity of this liquid may be sufficient to allow the inner surface of the lamp to be washed free from deposits. As shown, the mercury cathode 6 is of large surface, and the anode 7 is isolated therefrom by a silica tube 8. A resistance 9 of about 1000 ohms is in series with the lamp. The apparatus is suitable for the continuous irradiation and ozonization of dwelling rooms. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) there is described an apparatus for treating a liquid 2, Fig. 1 (Cancelled) which may form an external electrode. The other electrode may be at the outer end of a re-entrant silica tube 3. A globule of mercury 5 may be included. The glow discharge 10 is indicated by shading lines. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
