Abstract

Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 24, 1931]. [Class 39 (i).] A lamp has an incandescent electrode comprising an amphoteric metal carrier, an emissive substance preferably barium, and an intermediate layer consisting, e.g. of strontium oxide plus zirconium oxide. The carrier may be a nickel cylinder having twisted nickel wires on its surface. An incandescent lamp may serve as a ballast resistance, and may have an envelope allowing ultra-violet rays to pass through and coloured, e.g. a deep blue in combination with a neon tube, or a deep reddishyellow in combination with tubes giving blue light. Iron-hydrogen resistances may be used to regulate the voltage. The apparatus may be built in a casing having an opal glass window. The filling may be of neon, argon, krypton or xenon, or argon at 3 mms, with mercury, or hydrogen, carbon-dioxide with or without helium, or organic vapours such as methane, or 10 per cent carbon dioxide with 90 per cent argon.
