Abstract

311,294. Spanner, H. J., and D÷ring, U. May 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-An electric discharge device is provided with an envelope permeable by ultra-violet rays and contains a filling of one or more rare gases, with or without mercury or other metallic vapour, and one or more self-heating cathodes coated with emissive substances the Richardson constant of which is less than three, such emissive substances having no action on the envelope of the device. Preferably, the electrodes are provided with a coating of highly active metals, e.g., barium, strontium or caesium, combined with amphoteric substances, such as aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide, or nickel oxide. The active substance may be incorporated in the body of the electrode either in the metallic form or as a compound and gradually diffuses to the surface. To start the discharge, the cathode is initially heated by an adjacent auxiliary electrode, the heating being continued by the discharge current itself. Specification 272,440 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of thorium oxide as an amphoteric substance. For lighting purposes, the envelope may contain various gases and be made of coloured or fluorescent glass. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
