Abstract

365,609. Discharge apparatus. BRASCH, A. and LANGE, F., 7, Reichstagsufer, Berlin. July 23, 1930, No. 22222. Convention date, July 23, 1929. [Class 39 (i).] Tubes for generating rapid cathode and canal rays and hard X-rays are constructed to withstand very high voltages by fitting within the tube a large number of conducting laminations transversely to its longitudinal axis to divide up its inner wall surrounding the discharge and so to prevent " sliding discharges " which would lead to independent discharges and rupture of the wall. The laminations may be resilient nickel rings 6 sprung into position and separated by narrow insulating gaps or may be formed by a helix of German silver or other resistance material. No outside source of potential is connected to the rings. The tube 1 may be of porcelain or organic material such as rubber and pasteboard. The vacuum need not exceed À001 mm. and expulsion of gas from parts of the tube is not necessary. Current may be led into the tube by metal caps 2, 3. The electrodes 4, 5 do not project far inwardly. The tubes may be immersed in oil. The voltages used may be as high as 1À3 million volts and elements may be converted by the rays. Specification 207,262, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also tubes in which the wall has grooves or projections to increase the surface path between the rings. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
