326,532. Scheidt, E. 0., and Foodstuffs Irradiation Co., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1928. Vacuum tubes. - A discharge tube having walls of quartz or like material transparent to ultraviolet rays contains an approximately cylindrical hollow electrode, Fig. 3, consisting of a plurality of evenly spaced tongues parallel to the axis of the tube. A plate of stainless steel may be cut along a plurality of parallel lines and bent into a spiral or cylindrical form. The tongues may be twisted as shown so as to lie in radial planes. The electrode may consist of two or more concentric members as shown in Fig. 4. In a modification the electrode is supported by the tongues which are adapted resiliently to engage with the walls of the tube. A filling of rare gas such as argon or neon may be used.
