Abstract
257,956. Scheidt, E. O. Sept. 6, 1926. Vacuum tubes. - Liquids to be sterilized are led over silica tubes in which high-tension electric discharges take place through gases such as neon or argon, producing ultra-violet rays but very little heat. A silica tube 6, Fig. 1, may be bent into parallel lengths surrounded at a distance of 1-2 mm. by porcelain tubes 8. In another arrangement, partly co-axial silica tubes 11, 12. Fig. 5, are joined as shown so that the discharge passes through the annular space and inner tube successively. Fifty or more of such tubes may be connected in series. Joints between silica and glass portions of the tubes are of the conical ground type. Fig. 4, the glass being outside, and are cooled by annular mercury cups cooled by water coils. According to the Specification as open to inspeotion under Sect. 91 (3) (a), glass portions of the discharge tubes may be arranged on the ceiling, for utilizing the luminous radiations. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
