Abstract
309,241. Crowne, A. A. J. Jan. 16, 1928. Vacuum tubes.- Radio valves are provided with a plate cathode of a radioactive substance, such as uranium or an alloy, and with a filling of helium, neon and air, preferably in the percentages 10, 5 and 85 respectively. Helical nickel grids B, G and cylindrical anodes A, C may be arranged inside and outside a cylindrical cathode K of uranium to utilize the radiations given off from both sides of the cathode. The electrodes are steadied by a glass disc F and supports D. The cathode is cold in use or may be warmed by a separate heating resistance replacing the electrodes A, B. For use as a single low- or high-frequency amplifier or detector, the two grids, and also the two anodes, are connected together. The two sets of electrodes may be used as two valves, such as two low- or high frequency amplifiers or a high-frequency amplifier and a detector, or a detector and a lowfrequency amplifier, the inner electrodes being used as the first valve except in the last case.
