Abstract
263,907. Brown, A. Hall-. Sept. 8, 1925. Pumping machines and fan apparatus; driving- gear; regulating.-A centrifugal governing device controls the starting or stopping of the supply of air to the carburettor of an internal combustion engine from a fan driven by the engine. The fan may be formed on the ordinary radiator cooling fan as described in Specification 263,075, the radiator fan A carrying on an extension a number of blades A<1> which work inside a casing B delivering air to the pipe C. The inlet valve to the carburettor is worked automatically by means dependent on the speed of the engine; (i) as shown in Fig. 5 a centrifugally-moved weight I<1> has a projection moving with lost motion between two stops on a pin J which controls an electric relay for moving the valve (ii) centrifugally actuated weights S<4>, Fig. 9, carry spring-pressed pins S holding the weights in one or other of two positions, the weights through the linkage S<2>, S<3>, moving the valve according to the engine speed. The devices shown.in Figs. 5 and 9 are housed in the hub of the radiator fan. The fan may be driven through a two-speed gear to maintain its delivery approximately uniform with wide variations in speed of the engine. This gear comprises two trains of spur wheels V<1>, V<4>, and V<2>, V<3>, Fig. 10, the wheels V<1>, V<2> being fast on the fan shaft T<1>. The other two wheels are loose on a shaft U<2> driven from the engine shaft having fixed thereon a disc carrying two centrifugally actuated pawls X<1>, V<1>, Fig. 11. With the engine speed low the pawl Y<1> is in engagement with its corresponding teeth on the wheel V<3> and the multiplying gear is in use ; with high engine speed the other train works. Both weights X<2>, Y<2> may carry pawls for engaging both wheels. The weights are interconnected by a spring. When it is desired to run the fan only at low engine speeds it is driven through a double centrifugally controlled friction clutch N<3>, P<3>, Fig. 7. In this device a pulley N' forming one part of the clutch is driven by the engine and carries the centrifugal weights N. The pulley &c. is maintained away from the other clutch part by a spring Q bearing on a fixed bracket Q<1> and on a collar O<2> on the shaft 0 carrying the pulley N<2>. A slide R is free to be moved along the shaft by the pedal R<2>. At high speeds the weights N are out of the path of the slide but at low speeds the weights and pulley N can be moved axially by depression of the pedal. The clutch is then closed and the fan driven through the. bush P<2> keyed to the fan shaft O<1>. A second set of centrifugal weights keep the clutch closed as the speed of the fan shaft rises. If it is desired to work the fan at high engine speeds a bush R<3> is placed between the slide R and a collar Q<5> on the shaft 0.
