Energy-absorbing elements. - The speed of steam or gas engines is controlled by means of a fan a mounted on the engine shaft and provided with a delivery opening of variable size, so that, when the load on the engine decreases and the speed increases, the opening is automatically increased to allow the fan to take more power from the engine. The opening may be increased by the increased air pressure of the fan or by an electro-magnetic device actuated by a dynamo driven by the engine, or by an ordinary centrifugal governor. In another form a fan is used in which the setting of the vanes is modified by variations in the speed of the engine so as to vary the size of the delivery orifice or passage.
