Abstract

551,667. Cooling and driving dynamos. POBJOY, D. R. Aug. 27, 1941, No. 10954. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXVI] A generator 26, Fig. 1, on an aircraft is driven by a turbine wheel 17 provided with outer blades 19 acted on by engine exliaust gases, and with inner blades 20 which draw cooling air round and through the generator. Exhaust gases from pipe 10, mixed with an air stream from forward facing pipe 11, are delivered to chamber 12 whence they are directed through nozzles 15 onto blades 19 to drive the generator. The used gases pass into annular or volute chamber 23 and outlet pipe 25. The inner blades 20 draw air through vent 28 and pass it through pipe 22 to outlet pipe 25. The generator 26 is insulated from the chamber 28 by a narrow space 27. When the generator reaches the desired speed a centrifugal governor 30 opens flaps 33 in the chamber 12 and byepasses a portion of the exhaust gases direct to the outlet pipe. A modified method of speed control is shown in Fig. 4, in which on increase of speed the governor 50 moves the turbine wheel 34 away from the nozzles 16 in volute chamber 12. Governor 50 has three balls 54 moving in radial grooves 53 in a plate 52 splined to the generator shaft 51. Under centrifugal force these press against a conical portion 55 and move the shaft 38 to the left, against the action of spring 56.
