Abstract
682,403. Elastic-fluid turbines; governors. ARMSTRONG-SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. Nov. 20, 1950 [Jan. 25, 1950], No. 1934/50. Classes 57 and 110(iii) In a gas turbine in which the motive fluid is supplied through a ring of stationary nozzles 19, which are tangential to a coacting rotor disc 11 disposed within the ring, the disc is mounted on a shaft 12 so as to be movable axially to a position in which the effectiveness of the motive fluid is reduced by centrifugal means, when a predetermined speed is exceeded. The turbine casing 15 is in two parts 15a, 15b which define, together with a ring 18, an annular turbine inlet 16. The ring 18 is pinned to the casing 15b and has slots with throat-producing portions rivetted therein to form, together with the casing 15a, the nozzles 19. The rotor disc 11 is splined to its shaft 12 and is urged against a governor by a spring 49. The governor comprises a frusto-conical ring 52 which coacts with balls which are carried in slots in a cage 55 and react against an abutment 56 on the shaft 12. The cage may have radial arms which engage grooves in the ring 52 and ensures radial movement of the balls. The turbine drives a pump 26. The turbine-pump construction forms the subjectmatter of Specification 682,402.
