Abstract
732,113. Gas turbines. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Feb. 16, 1953 [Feb. 20, 1952], No. 4437/52. Class 110(3). A gas turbine starter motor has a cartridge to supply motive power for the initial starting of the starter turbine and for a separate turbine driving a fuel pump for supplying liquid fuel to a combustion chamber feeding the starter turbine. A cartridge 1 is connected by a passage 2 to a combustion chamber and turbine 3, which is connected through mechanism 4 to the engine being started. A passage 5 connects the combustion chamber to a turbine driven pump 6 which draws fuel from a tank 7 and discharges it through a shut-off valve 10 and control valve 13 to the combustion chamber. When the switch 17 is closed, the valve 10 is operated to open the passage 11 and close the passage 12 leading back to the fuel tank. The switch 18 is now closed and the cartridge 20 detonated. Gases then pass to the combustion chamber and starter turbine 3 for the initial starting of the starter turbine. Some of these gases pass through the combustion chamber 3 to the turbine driven pump 6. The pump then supplies fuel to the combustion chamber which is ignited by the hot gases from the cartridge. The spring-loaded control valve 13 regulates the fuel supply. After the initial starting, the pump 6 is supplied with motive fiuid from the combustion chamber. To shut down, the switch '17 is opened to cause the valve 10 to open passage 12 and shut passage 11.
