Abstract

1321980 Steam generators M J BERLYN 22 April 1971 [25 May 1970] 20782/71 Heading F4A Hot vapour under pressure is produced by igniting compressed air and fuel in a combustion chamber 19 into which water is injected in dependence upon the temperature of the vapour. Air is compressed by a compressor 11 into which primary water is injected at 22 by a pump 51 driven by a cam-shaft 69 of the compressor. The air passes through 17 into combustion chamber 19 where fuel is injected at 23 by a pump 52 driven by cam-shaft 69, and ignited by a glow plug 25. Secondary water is injected at 24 by a pump 53 driven by a cam-shaft 29 of an expansion motor 12 fed through port 20 with some of the hot vapour and which is used to drive the compressor 11. A cranking motor 56 is provided for starting the compressor. Supply of vapour to the motor 12 is controlled by a valve 47 operated by a speed governor 42; a solenoid 57 ensures that the valve 47 is closed during starting. The remainder of the hot vapour is discharged through branch 21 and valves 50, 59 to an external circuit where it drives other expansion engines. The temperature in the combustion chamber 19 is controlled by a sensor 26 which actuates a cam-shaft 39 regulating the output of the fuel and water pumps 52, 53. A pressure responsive servo 27 also drives a camshaft 34 which controls the primary water and fuel pumps 51, 52 and also the spring loading of the governor 42 thereby to vary the speed of the motor 12.
