849,673. Starter turbines. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 22, 1957 [March 1, 1956], No. 6112/57. Class 110 (3). Fuel is supplied to the burner of a turbine starter through an electrically operated solenoid valve which is opened when the solenoid is energised and a valve in a by-pass around the fuel pump is so arranged that when the solenoid operated valve is opened the by-pass valve prevents the flow of fuel from the outlet to the inlet of the pump. Fuel and air are supplied to the burner of a starter turbine by pumps 13, 12 respectively driven by an electric motor 11 energised by push button controlled by the pilot. During the initial few seconds, the blower 12 purges the combustion chamber of gas, and the pump 13 discharges through the by-pass 16 to its inlet. After this period, the solenoid 37 is energised and the valve member 38 is unseated. This allows fuel to pass to the burners and at the same time to pass through the conduits 48, 62 to act on the piston 50 of the by-pass valve '49 which then closes. This causes the pressure in the discharge duct 22 to rise and the valve 14 to be opened by the pressure on the piston 24. A simple ball check valve in the conduit 35 is closed by the gas pressure in the combustion chamber to prevent further supply of air. A pressure operated starter switch 18 is provided to control the unit.
