Abstract

263,163. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Dec. 15, 1925, [Convention date]. Samples furnished. Polycyclic ketones.-The conversion of aromatic or heterocyclic ketones, substituted by halogen in the o- or peri-position to the carbonyl group, into cyclic ketones is effected by heating them in the dissolved, molten, or gaseous state with a salt of an alkali or an alkaline earth having a slightly alkaline action, or with an acidbinding agent of slightly alkaline action, for example, sodium or calcium carbonate, sodium acetate, or magnesium oxide. Catalytically acting substances such as copper, copper carbonate, or iron carbonate may also be present. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) contains examples according to which the following ketones are obtained :-(1) fluorenone by heating o-chlor-benzoylbenzene with sodium carbonate at 300‹ C.; (2) benzanthrone by vapourizing o-chlorbenzoylnaphthalene in a current of nitrogen and passing the vapour at 350- 450‹ C. over pumice impregnated with potassium carbonate; (3) 4-methylbenzanthrone by heating 1-0-chlorbenzoyl-2-methylnaphthalene to the boiling point with sodium acetate; 4: Bz2-dimethylbenzanthrone by heating 1-o-chlorbenzoyl-2: 6- dimethylnaphthalene at 300-310‹ C. with potassium carbonate and a mixture, of aromatic hydrocarbons of high boiling point. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
