Abstract

In the production of permanent gas by the gasefication of mineral oil with sufficient oxidizing gas to form a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen of stoichiometric composition, the oil vapours and oxidizing gas are passed over a porous catalyst, such as active carbon, porous earthenware, silica gel, mixed with a substance from each of the groups: (a) Cr, Mn, Ni, Co; (b) Fe, Cu, Zn; (c) an oxide of Al, Mg, Ca, Zr, Th; the catalyst being heated to a temperature of 600--1000 DEG C. The oxidizing gas may comprise steam, carbon dioxide, air or pure oxygen; the oil may consist of gas oil, tarry oils, or oils from bituminous rocks. The quantity of oxidizing gas may be greater than the stoichiometric requirements and the temperature and pressure may also be varied if illuminants such as methane are desired in the resulting gas. In examples, mixtures of gas oil and steam are passed through a heated tube filled with porous earthenware covered with a Ni-Fe-MgO catalyst.
