Amino compounds; ethers; cyclic hydrocarbons. - Anthracene derivatives are prepared by subliming the corresponding anthraquinone derivative in presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenating catalyst at a high temperature. In the same way benzanthrone is converted into benzanthrene. Examples are given in which the starting material, mixed with copper or zinc dust, is gradually sublimed into a stream of hydrogen passed through a tube containing copper or a mixture of copper and zinc as catalyst; in this manner, #- anthramine is prepared from 2-aminoanthraquinone, a-anthramine from 1-aminoanthraquinone, 2-methylanthramine from 2-methylanthraquinone, 1-diethylanthramine from 1-diethylaminoanthraquinone, 2 : 6-dimethoxyanthracene from anthraflavinic acid dimethylether, 2-methylanthracene from 2-methylanthraquinone, and benzanthrene from benzanthrone. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) mentions the use of other reduc. ing gases than hydrogen. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. 1-Diethylaminoanthraquinone is prepared by heating 1-chloranthraquinone with diethylamine.
