Abstract

Highly pure 1-aminoanthraquinone is prepared by hydrogenating 1-nitroanthraquinone, suspended in an aqueous medium in the presence of a base, using a hydrogenation catalyst and then oxidising the hydrogenation product. According to variants of this process, the starting material used can also be crude 1-nitroanthraquinone which contains dinitroanthraquinones as impurities or crude 1-aminoanthraquinone which contains diaminoanthraquinones as impurities, the reaction conditions being given in detail in Claims 1 to 5. The process has the advantage that, compared to known processes, the use of a mercury catalyst can be dispensed with. The products prepared are important intermediates for the preparation of anthraquinone dyestuffs, vat dyestuffs or pigments.
