Abstract
260,566. Rheinische Metallwaarenund- Maschinenfabrik. Nov. 2, 1925, [Convention date]. Driving arrangements.-In gun-training gear and other heavy machinery, reaction upon the driving-means is prevented and the extent of the motion transmitted to the machinery is controlled, as in Specification 276,847, by the use of worm and wheel gearing acting upon the driven member and driven by hand or weak power means, but in the present application, two or more such worm and wheel gears are arranged in series, parallel, or other manner, and may be combined with differential gearing. A member d, which may be formed on a gun base, is driven from a powerful electromotor g through a spurwheel e on the armature shaft f, which carries also a wormwheel h engaged by a worm i driven by a weak motor k. The worm i is geared to a wormwheel n gearing with a worm n' rotated by a hand-wheel n<2>. Current may be supplied constantly at .full strength to the motors g, k, but all motion will be controlled by the motion of the hand-wheel, the motor k serving to overcome the friction resistance in the gear h, i and the motor g supplying the power for gun training. Alternatively, the movement of the hand-wheel may close a switch to establish the motor circuits and may also control the current supply according to its speed of rotation. Further, a control device driven by motor or by hand may, by reversal of the hand-wheel, reverse the motors g, k. More than two gears arranged in series, as shown, or in parallel or otherwise may be employed, in which case separate motors may be used or several gears may be driven by one motor. By the use of suitable spring couplings or other elastic gear members in the trains, the movements of all or some of the gears may be derived from the main engine or motor. In the device shown in Fig. 4, two auxiliary motors t<1>, t<2> drive through worm gears r<1>, q<1> and r<2>, q<2> opposite members of an epicyclic gear p of which the planet carrier is geared to and drives a third worm gear u, v geared by a wheel o to the driven wheel d. In a modification, the planet carrier drives the wheel o directly. Two members of two epicyclic gear trains may be connected together, three motors being used to drive three other members through worm gear and the sixth member of the trains driving a final worm u or a wheel o. The various control motors may be actuated by devices of which it is desired to superpose the movements upon the gun, for example devices for following up the target, for allowing for the oscillations of the ship, as by means of a gyroscopic device, and for allowing for temperature influences, changes of the initial velocity of the shot, &c.
