Abstract
568,148. Electric control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CARNEGIE, H. S. March 13, 1943, No. 4135. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A non-reversing motor 1 drives a ship's steering gear one way or the other, according to which of two electromagnetic slip clutches 3, 9 is energized. If the clutch 3 is energized the shaft 2 carries round with it a pinion 4 meshing with a gear-wheel 5 driving a shaft 6 and sector 8 connected to the rudder. If clutch 9 is energized, the shaft 2 carries round with it a pinion 10 which drives the wheel 5 in the opposite direction through intermediate gearing 11, 12. In the arrangement shown energization of the particular clutch is effected by movement of the helm 13 and the motor 1 then drives the rudder and with it a sector J5a through a corresponding angle till the clutch is de-energized. In a modification, Fig. 3, a potentiometer arrangement is used. The helm moves a contact 14a causing current to flow one way or the other and so energize the clutch 3d or 9d, contact 15a being moved a corresponding amount to de-energize the clutch when the movement is completed.
