Abstract

105,954. Zweigbergk, G. von. May 1, 1916. Variable-speed and reversing gearing for motorvehicles &c. comprises two epicyclic trains in series, each being controlled by a plate clutch which is operated in one direction by the power of the driving or driven shaft through the medium of a magnetically-operated plate clutch and a screw. An epicyclic train E, E<1>, E<4> transmits power from a driving-shaft A to a hollow shaft G connected to the planet carrier E<3>. In the position shown, a plate clutch F connecting the planet carrier to the annulus E<4> is disengaged and the speed is reduced. The annulus is held against rotation by a member F<3> in toothed engagement with a magnet carrier D, and the electro-magnet D<1> is energized, a plate clutch C being thereby released. To transmit the full speed of the shaft A to the shaft G, the magnet is de-energized, the clutch C is engaged by a spring C<5> and a sleeve C<4> is rotated. This sleeve is screw-threaded into the member F<3>, which is thereby moved to the tight becoming unlocked, and at the same time applies the clutch F. The epicyclic train then revolves as a whole. When the magnet is again energized, the part F<3> is returned by a torsion spring F<4>. A similar epicyclic train G<1>, G<2>, H<1>, controlled by a plate clutch G<6>, threaded members J, J<1>, magnet M', and plate clutch M' connected to the driven shaft N, transmits two speeds from the shaft G to an intermediate shaft G<5>. By combining the two trains, four forward speeds are obtained. For reversing, a toothed segment K<2> on a rod L, which normally holds a disk K against rotation, is moved to the left, so as to engage teeth G<8> and lock the planet carrier G<4>, and, at the same time, a claw clutch Q<1> on an arm L<2> moves out of engagement with teeth P' on the shaft G<5> into engagement with teeth H<3> on a sleeve H<2> connected to the annulus H, the clutch Q<1> driving the shaft N through a member N<1>. The planet carrier being stationary, the annulus is reversed, and two speeds of reverse are obtained by means of the first epicyclic train.
