Abstract
259,573. Holdener, S. Oct. 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Reversing-gearing; securing wheels on shafts.- Reversing-gearing suitable for machine tools comprises a toothed wheel 13 driven alternately in opposite directions through idlers 11, 12, respectively., which are carried in a frame 10 which rocks. The wheel 13 is constantly immersed in oil in a casing 1 and is fitted with a dash-pot shock-absorber utilizing the oil. The driving- shaft 3 carries a pinion 4 constantly meshing with an idler 5 supported by the casing 1. The rocker 10 has arms 8, 9 which carry the pinions 11, 12, respectively, which mesh constantly with the wheel 13 upon a sleeve 14 which is loose upon a, countershaft 7. The wheel is driven in one direction or the other according as the pinion 12 meshes with the pinion 4 or the pinion 11 meshes with the idler 5. In each case with driving rotation in the direction of arrow A, the reaction of the wheel 13 causes the pinion on the frame to be pressed into engagement. Power passes from the wheel 13 through the shock-absorbing coupling to the sleeve 14 and thence through a pinion 15, Fig. 1, to a wheel 16 fast on a driven shaft 18. Reversal is effected periodically by a loose wheel 28 which is driven by a pinion 29 fast on the driven shaft 18. This control wheel carries a lug 27, Fig. 3, which strikes one or other of two springs 30 upon the rocker 10, thus carrying the rocker from one gear position to the other. Adjustable stops 31, 32 limit the displacement of the rocker. To stop the drive, a control shaft 34 is turned by a handle 33 into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 6 when a pair of lugs 35. 36 extend transversely between abutments 37, 38 upon the rocker, holding the rocker in mid position. To start the drive, the handle 33 is turned through a right angle. A projection 40, Fig. 6, engages the end of a spring 41 and thrusts the rocker to one of its gear positions. A telescopic spring toggle link 45, Fig. 5, helpsf to throw the rocker completely over on each reversal. Excess of oil is used to cushion shock on. reversing by causing it to circulate by vanes 23, 25, Figs. 1 and 3, on the wheel 13 and sleeve 14 respectively. The wheel 13 has a cylindrical cavity closed by a disc 21 integral with the sleeve. Relative motion of the vanes causes oil to be sucked in and thrust out through apertures 26 in the disc 21.
