Converting reciprocating into rotary motion.- Relates to gearing for converting the reciprocating movement of a lever into rotation of a shaft in either direction, in which hubless floating toothed gears are employed. A reciprocating lever 53 is secured to a shaft 16 carried in a casing 1 - - 4, which shaft carries eccentrics 49, 50 operating links 51, 52 connected to non-rotary spindles 46, 47 sliding in slots in the casing. Pinions 43, 44, 45 are connected by ratchets or the like to the spindles 46, 47 so as to allow free rotation in the direction shown by the arrows. Pairs of floating wheels 37, 38 gear together and with the pinions 43, 45, and also with pinions 31, 32, which are geared together by pinions 33, 34. Floating wheels 39 gear together and with the pinions 44, and also with pinions 35, 36, which are geared with the pinions 31, 32 by bevel-gearing 26, 28, 27, 25 carried outside the frame. Correct register of all the parts is ensured by the use of flanged and grooved parts 40, 41, flanged idlers 42, 42a supporting the wheels 37, 38, 39 being also employed. Toothed wheels 19 secured to the spindles 11, 13 of the pinions 31, 32 may be geared alternatively for reversal, with a wheel 20 carried on an adjustable lever 22 and secured to a shaft 21, which may be connected by universal joints to the driven shaft. Reciprocation of the lever 53 produces sliding of the spindles 46, 47, which turns the wheels 37, 38, 39 and thus rotates the wheels 31, 32 in opposite directions.
