Couplings, automatic; combined buffer and drawer-gear.-In an automatic coupler of the rigid jaw type, the upper surface of the coupler head is provided with a horizontal surface f adapted to extend over the upper surface of the small jaw e of the engaging coupler head to prevent relative vertical movement of the engaged couplings, so that train-pipe coupling joints can be inserted in'the contacting faces of the couplings. The upper surface of each coupling is provided with an inclined hood d which, together with the inclined surface on the jaw b, forms vertical and lateral guiding surfaces for the jaw e of the opposing coupler as the couplings approach one another.
