Abstract

257,434. Beaumont, J. H., (Metal Research Corporation). Oct. 14, 1925. Hydrogen.-In a process for the production of hydrogen, ferrous oxide is reduced by producer gas to pyrophoric iron at a, temperature below 600‹ C. in the upper of two chambers, and the iron obtained treated with steam, at a temperature below 700‹ C. to prevent formation of the magnetic oxide, in the lower chamber, the hydrogen produced being collected. The ferrous oxide produced may be re-used to obtain more hydrogen. The process is preferably continuousely operated. The reduction of the ferrous oxide is preferably carried out between 400-550‹ C., and the oxidation of the iron with steam between 500-650‹ C. The temperatures in the chambers may be controlled by hand-operated means.
