Abstract

Metals obtained by the thermal decomposition of the corresponding carbonyls are subjected to a heat treatment to reduce the carbon. An iron powder obtained by the thermal decomposition of iron carbonyl and containing 0,98 per cent of carbon, is sintered at 900 DEG C. in hydrogen to reduce the carbon to 0,03 per cent. An iron powder containing 1,3 per cent of carbon and 1,7 per cent of oxygen is decarbonized by sintering in a cylindrical mould in a calcining furnace at about 1000 DEG C.
