Abstract

An alloy comprises at least 90% tungsten with the balance, apart from impurities, being ruthenium. A modified alloy may consist of .Mo.up to 2% .Ru.trace up to 0.5% .Ni.up to 6% .Fe.up to 1.5% the balance, apart from impurities, being tungsten in an amount of at least 90%. The alloy may be made by adding tungsten powder to a saturated solution of ruthenium trichloride in water whilst stirring, drying the residue (e.g. at 200-300 DEG C.), heating it (e.g. at 800 DEG C. in hydrogen) to reduce the trichloride, adding Ni, Fe and Mo powders in the required proportions, compacting the mixture (e.g. at 20,000 p.s.i.) and sintering the compact (e.g. at 1,460 DEG C. in hydrogen).
