Abstract
In the production of shaped metal articles by sintering metal powders, the mass to be sintered is arranged so that the direction in the article in which the shrinkage during sintering is greatest is about vertical, to prevent cracking. The interior of the sinter mould may be coated with a refractory substance such as graphite, alumina or chamotte meal. In an example 100 parts of iron powder containing 1,2 per cent of carbon and 1,5 per cent of oxygen, and 1 part of flaky ferric oxide, both obtained from iron carbonyl, are placed in a sheet iron mould with its longest edge vertical and sintered in an electrically heated annealing furnace at 1000 DEG C. for 3 hours.
