Abstract

256,696. Higgins, E. L. May 13, 1925. Locks, permutation; attaching; locking sliding latches.-A lock of the coaxially mounted locking ring type has staggered projections on the bolt and duplex rings frictionally held so that in the intermediate position of the bolt the inner rings are held, while the outer rings are rotated to change the combination. Fig. 1 shows such a lock with the bolt 38 withdrawn and the staggered projections 39 turnable in recesses in the inner rings 40 after having passed the gates 41. When the bolt is shot, the projections re-pass through the gates and are within the recesses of the adjacent rings. To change the combination, the bolt is moved to the intermediate position when the projections 39 are in the gates 41 and hold the inner locking rings 40 while the outer setting rings 42 are rotated to the new combination. The pairs of rings 40, 42 may be held in frictional engagement by a leaf spring housed in a recess. The rings may be mounted in a casing 37 provided with an aperture 46 for setting, and viewing apertures 48, or the casing may be dispensed with. False notches may be provided to prevent picking. The setting rings have a milled part 45 for setting and nicks 49 coacting with spring plungers 50 to maintain their adjusted position. The bolt 38 may block a door latch 58, Fig. 5, or engage a socket 55 to lock window sashes, Fig. 4, in which case the casing 37 is integral with an attaching bracket 51 secured by a screw 53.
