Blocks acting on drums; blocks and shoes.- In clutches and brakes of the kind comprising a pair of semicircular shoes a, pivoted at one end to a base plate c and adapted at the other end to be expanded into engagement, as by a cam g, a spring or pair of springs h, preferably of the bowshaped leaf type, is arranged within the shoes and so co-operates with them and with a pair of abutment pins i, projecting from the plate c, as to press the shoes inwardly and also hold them against the plate c. The angle-section shoes a, made by forging, casting, or preferably stamping, may engage separated or concentric pivots, but are shown formed with semicircular depressions d<1> to engage a common pivot e, the ends h' of the leaf springs h pressing by their faces on blocks d, f at the ends of the shoes, and by their edges on the flanges a<2> of the shoes. The faces of the blocks d, f on which the ends h<1> rest may be recessed. The springs are held in place by the heads i<1> of the pins i by having external loops to encircle reduced necks of the pins, or by traversing slots in the pins, being retained therein by caps. The flanges a<2> may be notched to clear the pins. A single C-shaped spring may be arranged to bear on the blocks f, a central out. wardly-projecting loop being provided adjacent the common pivot e or between separate pivots of the shoes.
