Abstract

Actuating pumps by fluidpressure motors.-In a directacting air compressor the free piston 14 moves inside a cylinder 11 which reciprocates freely in a frame 10, a series of spring buffers 70. 71 tending to keep the cylinder in a mean position. The cylinder is closed at its ends by heads 12, 13, the head 13 having automatic suction valves 50 for the compressor side of the cylinder. The compressed air is delivered through cylinder ports 56, and delivery valves 53 to a collecting ring 51 and thence to a reservoir 55. The combustion chamber head 12 carries a sparking plug, an air admission valve 18 and a rich mixture valve 17 communicating through the telescoping piping 19 to a carburettor 20. The exhaust ports 43 in the frame are controlled by ports 42 in the cylinder. A trip magneto 47 is worked by the spring detent 48. To start the engine the sparking plug is removed and the piston 14 moved to the position shown by a rod inserted in the plug hole. Fuel is injected into the air and then the combustion space is closed by replacement of the plug. One of the valves 53 is lifted and compressed air from the reservoir pushes the piston in the direction of the arrow 57 and the cylinder in the opposite direction. At a particular point in the stroke the magnet is tripped, an explosion takes place, and the movements are reversed. Air in front of the piston is compressed and some is delivered to the reservoir, a certain amount being retained to form a buffer which returns the piston on the succeeding stroke.
