Machinery, utilizing inertia to obtain movements in.-In a direct-acting air compressor driven by the combustion of an explosive charge a valve 31 controlling delivery of a charge of gas under pressure from the power cylinder to a reservoir 154 is worked from a fixed cam 36. The head 40, Fig. 3, of the valve rod is embraced by a fork 39 on a lever 34 carried by a bracket 38 on the reciprocating cylinder. A small cylinder 41 is formed in the lever on the side remote from the fork, and a roundnosed piston 42 is placed in this cylinder. The cam roller 35 is carried in an arm pivoted on the same spindle as the lever and is constrained to bear against the cam by a spring 45. During movement to the left the piston 42 is away from the bottom 46 of the arm, and the arm can move under the cam lobe without affecting the valve; at the end of this movement, inertia effect causes the piston 42 to pass under the arm and lock the arm and lever together, so that when the cylinder moves in the direction of the arrow 151 the valve is opened.
