Abstract

102,852. Robinson, C. Feb. 28, 1916. Valve-gear.-In four-stroke-cycle engines having movable cylinder heads g, g<1>, Fig. 2, each head is provided with ribs 2 working in slots at the upper end of the cylinder and is moved downwards by a cam 6, or an equivalent such as a grooved cam or a combination of springs and a grooved cam or eccentric, acting on a roller 8, and upwards by means of springs 4. The cams 6 are keyed on a shaft f, which also carries cams 15, 16 for actuating the inlet and exhaust valves, and is worked from the crank-shaft e through the following gearing. A wheel 23 is connected by a chain 22 to a wheel 21, on which are mounted two pairs of raw-hide rollers 19, Fig. 4. A quadrilateral wheel 17 and a star-wheel 18 having eight teeth are mounted on the shaft f and the latter wheel is engaged by the rollers 19. The wheel 17 is engaged by a disk wheel 25 secured to the wheel 21 and having notches 26, 27 cut in it, these gears interlocking when the wheel 18 is not in motion. During admission the head g is at its highest position, and on the next up-stroke of the piston c, it remains stationary, but on the following downstroke it moves down with the piston until the crank is about forty-five degrees from the vertical. Ignition then takes place and the head remains stationary.
