Abstract
248,453. Ikeda, K. Dec. 3, 1924. Glutamic acid and its salts are obtained from schlempe, a bye-product of beet-molasses, by hydrolyzing it and converting the glutannic acid into its sparingly soluble calcium salt. The schlempe. liquor may be treated with excess of lime to produce the desired calcium salt in one operation, or it may first be hydrolyzed with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, and the neutralized solution treated with lime. Alternatively, the sohlempe is treated with hydrochloric acid, and after filtering off humus-like products, crystalline potassium chloride and betaine hydrochloride, the concentrated filtrate, is further treated with hydrochloric acid to form glutamic acid hydrochloride, which is dissolved in water and digested with excess of lime. Addition of alcohol or of a soluble calcium salt and ammonia facilitates the separation of the sparingly soluble calcium, salt. This salt may be treated with mineral acids to obtain glutamic acid, or by the addition of acid salts formed by the combination of alkalis and acids whose neutral calcium salts are insoluble, soluble alkali glutamates may be obtained. The soluble calcium glutamate may be. obtained by treating the sparingly soluble calcium salt with carbon dioxide in presence of water. Specifications 9440/09 and 12737/11 are referred to.
