Abstract

243,621. Renault, L. Dec. 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Spray carburettors. -High speed, high compression engines particularly suitable for use on aeroplanes, in which the compression varies with speed and altitude, are provided with means for supplying alternatively two or more fuels, the change over from one fuel to the other being effected automatically in accordance with the pressure existing in the cylinder at the end of the compression period. An auxiliary cylinder 3 communicates with the combustion chamberthrough a valve 1 opened at the end of the compression stroke, and contains a piston 4 loaded by an adjustable spring 7. The rod 4<1> of the piston 4 is connected through a link 14, Fig. 2, and arm 13 with the plug 12 of a multiple-way cock 10 situated in the outlet of a carburettor having as many constant level chambers 9, 9' and nozzles as there are fuels. With a decrease of compression pressure, the fuel suitable for use at high compression is gradually cut off, and that adapted for lower compression brought into use. Mixtures of the fuels are supplied in the intermediate positions of the plug, but in a modification, a snap-over device, comprising a spring and slotted link, ensures an abrupt change from one fuel to the other.
